How to Avoid Necessary Drain Field Repair

Septic Services LakelandPosted bySeptic Services LakelandAugust 20th, 2021

A septic system drain field is an important part of the system. If you need drain field repair or replacement, it can be quite costly. That’s why it is important to know where your drain field is located so you can take steps to protect it. Here are a few ways to avoid the need for drain field repair or replacement.

  1. How to Avoid Necessary Drain Field Repair Avoid construction near or over the drain field, including carports, driveways, patios, and paved areas.
  2. Do not dig into the drain field and do not place anything but shallow-rooted plants or grass over the area. Do not plant any edible plants in the area, as they may become contaminated. Never use landscaping plastic over the drain field, as it needs air to function properly.
  3. Trees and shrubs should be as far from the drain field as possible – preferably 30 feet or more. Even those with minimal root systems will tend to extend farther than usual when they are given the wonderful water source of a drain field.
  4. Never place heavy items on the drain field, including vehicles.
  5. Keep any water runoff on the property directed away from the drain field so it doesn’t become overly saturated.
  6. Learn to recognize warning signs that drain field repair is needed so issues don’t become worse than they already are. Signs include wet spots in the area, backups into the home, slow drains, bad smells, and gurgling sounds. Have well water checked regularly to watch for contamination that could be caused by a failing drain field.

One way to be sure everything is operating correctly is to have a professional septic system company inspect the system at least once per year. If you live in Lakeland, Florida, give us a call at Southeastern Septic LLC for this service.
