4 Crucial Septic System Maintenance Tips

Septic Services LakelandPosted bySeptic Services LakelandAugust 20th, 2021

There are two situations that occur when a septic system has not been properly maintained. One situation is immediately apparent and quite inconvenient — the system fails and needs to be repaired or possibly replaced. The second is that the septic system contaminates soil and water. This may not be immediately noticeable, but it can be serious because it can threaten the health of your family, your neighbors, and the environment. With both of these dangers, it just makes sense to consider a few easy septic system maintenance tips.

  1. 4 Crucial Septic System Maintenance TipsLaundry – There are a number of things that should be considered regarding doing laundry if you have a septic system. First of all, it is better to space the loads over the course of the week instead of doing them all in one day. Dryer sheets should be used rather than a liquid fabric softener. Care should also be taken when selecting laundry soap — choose low suds, low phosphate and biodegradable options.
  2. Cleaners – Avoid the use of antibacterial cleaners that will go into the septic system. Furthermore avoid pine oil-based cleansers and quaternary ammonia products. Drain cleaning chemicals should be kept to an absolute minimum. Choose biodegradable cleansers whenever possible.
  3. Garbage Disposal – The less that is put through the garbage disposal, the better, but definitely avoid fats, oils and greases. An alternate solution for disposing of vegetable peelings, egg shells and coffee grounds is to put them into a compost pile where they can be used to naturally fertilize plants in the yard.
  4. Medications – Never flush medications, especially antibiotics, down the toilet, as they will totally upset the balance of the septic system and may leach into the ground, as well.

These are just a few septic system maintenance tips to keep in mind. An annual inspection of your system by a trained professional who can give you a complete list of tips is recommended.
