3 Signs That Septic Tank Pumping Is Necessary

Septic Services LakelandPosted bySeptic Services LakelandAugust 20th, 2021

Septic tank pumping is a maintenance issue that must be addressed regularly during the lifespan of a septic system. Layers of scum and sludge build up inside the tank, and they need to be cleaned out. Fortunately, there are some symptoms that may indicate your tank needs to be pumped.

  1. Odor: If you can smell sewage, this is a strong sign that the tank is in need of pumping. Sometimes, the odor can come from a break in the drain field line. If so, this is a separate problem that will need to be checked before septic tank pumping can be done. But if there is a strong odor and no broken lines, it is time to pump the tank.
  2. Toilet Backup: If your toilets back up and you have tried to unclog them with no success, it’s highly probable that the tank needs pumping. When a tank is full, toilets back up, and you may also notice discolored waste water backing up into bathtubs and showers.
  3. Overflow: If there’s a lot of foul-smelling water around the septic tank that has risen to a level above the tank cover, this could also be a sign that it’s time for septic tank pumping. However, overflows aren’t always due to an overfilled tank; they can be caused by a breakage somewhere in the system’s lines. This is something that will also need checking.
